Serbian President Vucic Announces Early Election with Dissolution of Parliament

Aleksandar Vucic moved the general elections planned for 2027 to 25 October 2026 and dissolved parliament.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced that the general elections originally scheduled for 2027 will be moved forward, with early elections to be held on 25 October 2026, and he dissolved parliament. Vucic said he will run for prime minister in this election; according to the constitution, he must resign from the presidency to take that office.

The Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) nominated Vucic as its prime‑ministerial candidate for the early election and announced that it will run in a coalition called “United Serbia”.

Following Vucic's resignation, the Speaker of the Assembly and former Prime Minister Ana Brnabić will temporarily assume the duties of president. Brnabić will set the date for the new presidential election.

The decision for an early election came after protests against the government that have lasted about two years, triggered by the collapse of a concrete structure at the Novi Sad train station in November 2024, which killed 16 people. Protesters criticize the government over public procurement, corruption allegations and the functioning of state institutions; Vucic argues that further postponement of the elections would threaten democracy.
