Green Iraq Observation Station Claims Four State Agencies Have Hindered Desertification Efforts

The Green Iraq Observation Station said that four ministries and related agencies have damaged garden and agricultural lands and blocked the fight against desertification.

The Green Iraq Observation Station explained that the Ministry of Settlement and Construction, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Transport and the governorates have contributed to the destruction of gardens and extensive agricultural lands in the country and have impeded the fight against desertification.

The station noted that these actions, involving the illegal cutting of long‑lived trees in public spaces, violate the Environmental Protection and Improvement Law and the approval of the president of the Environmental Protection and Improvement Council of the respective province. It also emphasized that, according to the Council of Ministers’ decision, the ministries must prevent the use of gardens and agricultural lands for housing or other purposes.

It was reported that the General Company for Implementation of Transportation Projects, which is affiliated with the Ministry of Transport, has signed a long‑term investment contract with the private sector to build warehouses on a garden in Baghdad that holds water rights. At the same time, the Highway Directorate’s plan for a road to the city of Ali Werdi in the Nehrewani area of Baghdad was said to conflict with numerous agricultural and irrigation projects and to damage gardens, farmlands and farmers’ homes.

The station also pointed out that the National Water Resources Management Center, under the Ministry of Water Resources, has not prepared a special study on the impacts of desertification, declining river water levels and shrinking water bodies on agriculture and forestry, and that the Ministry of Agriculture’s measures to reduce desertification risk are insufficient.
